A Florida firefighter has been fired after he repeatedly punched an unruly patient who spat on him inside a Miami hospital, according to reports.
Video obtained by Local 10 shows a shirtless man, identified as Antonio Cruz, flailing around on a gurney while surrounded by EMTs and police at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Cruz had been taken into custody on an unspecified charge and was transferred to the hospital while under the influence of cocaine and heroin, according to WSVN.
After yelling at the first responders, Cruz spat in the direction of firefighter Robert Webster, the station reported.
Webster immediately began raining blows down on Cruz as he tried his best to avoid the onslaught while handcuffed to the gurney.
Several other officials at the scene attempted to intervene as the gurney skidded across the hospital floor.
The City of Miami Fire Rescue said Webster has been fired and that it is probing the incident.
“When this incident occurred, the individual was immediately Relieved of Duty. Our department is conducting an administrative investigation while this individual remains in a Relieved of Duty status,” the agency said.
According to several outlets, Webster was previously in the news when six of his firefighter colleagues were terminated after someone placed a noose on a family picture on his desk at a firehouse.
