Green was born in Kingston, New York on February 11, 1970. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated as one of four valedictorians from Quaker Valley High School in 1988; as a Quaker Valley student, he was president of the Key Club and participated on the school’s football and tennis teams.

Green earned a Bachelor of Science in anthropology from Swarthmore College in 1992 and a Doctor of Medicine from Pennsylvania State University’s Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Centre in 1997. He then completed a three-year family medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh.
